The Oba Mcmillan Nima School

A project aimed at improving the educational opportunities of kids around the Nima area in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana

The Mcmillan Nima school was started in 2010 and was Music Loves Math’s first project in Ghana. Nima is one of the poorest neighborhoods in Accra.   Poor education and the lack of a support system for the children make breaking the cycle of poverty a challenge.  We supplement the existing educational system with a facility and program that provides daily classes in English, Math, and Computer Science for children in a friendly environment. We also have a small library that children can borrow from to read and learn at home.

We believe in creating a loving and fun environment for children to learn.  Our children benefit from being in a caring and flexible educational environment where we aim at helping children learn, rather than constantly measuring them to external standards.

Coding is a skill set that can be used in almost any field in the modern world. It also creates the potential for any child regardless of location to learn and enter the global economy. We outfitted the library with a set of computers and have offered the children courses using Scratch from MIT and other online education programs like Khanacademy.org. We aim  to buy new computers for the Nima School in 2022.
