A project aimed at equipping high school students with computer coding skills
Coding is one of the easiest ways for young people to directly enter the global economy. Education, a computer, and the internet are all that someone needs to code and earn a living from companies around the world. Most schools in Ghana lack the infrastructure and curriculum to offer coding classes, hence excluding the children from participating in this growing segment of the global economy. Music Loves Math addresses this inequity by providing regular free coding classes to children at high-schools in Ghana.
We started out with 20 laptops, 2 teachers, and 4 schools. We hold classes twice a week at each school. The teachers bring the laptops to each school when they teach. This lowers the costs by maximizing the impact of each teacher and our laptops.
Our upcoming project in the Ghana Codes Initiative is to partner with the government to provide advanced coding classes to college graduates who are doing their Ghanaian National Service. In Ghana, all college graduates have to do a year of national service. nstead of working for that year, the government with provide NSS personnel with stipend and Music Loves Math will provide year-long intensive coding program and help provide job placement upon completion.
