The Ben and Lorna Smith Odumekyir Library

A 20,000-book capacity library in the heart of Cape Coast

The Odumekyir Library is locted in the Central Region near the city of Cape Coast. None of the schools in the district have libraries, computer labs or a free comfortable space for children to learn.  In 2020 we completed the construction of the library and with the help of Books For Africa, filled it with over 20,000 books.

In addition to operating a library for the community, we partnered with the local schools to provide reading classes during school hours in order to maximize utilization. Over 1000 children now have access to our library.  We are looking to expand our impact by opening satellite libraries with rotational book programs in schools that are further from the our facility.

Coding is a skill set that can be used in almost any field in the modern world. It also creates the potential for any child regardless of location to learn and enter the global economy.  Our next project is to outfit the library with a set of 20 computers and high speed internet to offer a computer lab and coding classes to local schools and children in the neighborhood.
